Westmorland and Furness Vesting Proclamation

The Story Behind The Picture

I made it into Kendal town centre on Saturday (1st April) to see the Town Crier ring in the changes. The proclamation was made at 1:00pm in Kendal Market Place to mark the start of the new Westmorland and Furness Council. The new unitary council will take responsibility for council services now that the former Barrow Borough, Eden District and South Lakeland District councils and Cumbria County Council have been dissolved.

Simon Unsworth, Town Crier, proclaimed the new Council, with Karen Edmondson from Cumbria Deaf Association signing.

Westmorland and Furness Council is now England's third-largest unitary authority, by area, providing services to around 225,000 residents in the former Barrow, Eden and South Lakeland areas.

A new Cumberland Council takes over the delivery of services in the former Council areas of Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland.

To find out more visit the Westmorland and Furness Council web site.

Almost ten years earlier, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Anne had arrived at the same place as the proclamation announcement was made. You can see the photos here.
